The ARC Story

Biodiversity is decreasing in oceans worldwide. It’s a problem we face on a global scale, and it was this issue that inspired action in a group of divers in the world-famous British fishing town of Brixham, back in 2015.

ARC Marine was brought to life that very year, with the mission to build biodiversity and to replenish reefs on a scale never before imagined. We would go about this by providing environmentally sound, durable solutions for traditional marine industries that would be built on years of research and development, and made available worldwide.

These solutions would not only protect and develop assets for the offshore wind, coastal defence and aquaculture industries, but would create invaluable marine habitat.

ARC’s very first product was the reef cube®, which remains our flagship technology to this day, is a low-carbon, plastic-free cube that’s made from 98% recycled materials. It features circular passageways on each face that lead to a spherical chamber and a rough, uneven surface to provide complexity and biomimicry, which builds a greater biodiversity. reef cubes can be used across a range of applications, including scour protection, moorings, breakwaters and eco-tourism.

Since its inception, our team of dedicated scientists and engineers has built on our family of products – creating solutions for subsea cables, seawalls and marine foundations.

Today, there’s been over 1,000 reef cubes deployed across the globe, bringing new life to our seas and with published scientific research backing their success.

As the climate crisis continues, there’s never been a more important time ensure that green energy industries like offshore wind, have access to biodiversity creating protection for subsea structures – helping to protect life both above and below the water.

For us there is new hope for the oceans and at ARC, our dedicated team of engineers, scientists and all-round ocean lovers is continuing to innovate and push the boundaries of how we can build reefs into an array of different industries, helping to leave a positive marine legacy.

Testimonials

“Kier have been very satisfied and pleased with ARC Marine throughout the preconstruction and construction stages of the Newlyn Tidal R&D project. ARC Marine have fabricated and delivered exceptional Intertidal reef cube® ECO armour units for the project where all parties, including Kier, the Environment Agency and Atkins, have been very impressed with the quality of finish of the units. Overall a very exceptional service from ARC Marine and would highly recommend.”

Jack Walker, Site Agent / Chartered Engineer, Kier Infrastructure – Regional Civil Engineering

“reef cubes® is a unique product that could reach a massive global market. Marine-i has been proud to help ARC Marine develop and test their amazing new approach to marine conservation and in particular, its application to marine renewable energy. Their pioneering products have the potential to improve the health of our oceans for generations to come.”

Alex Whatley, University of Plymouth

"ARC Marine are providing 25% of the reef blocks for the Newlyn project. Their blocks offer multi-functional benefits, such as biodiversity enhancing design and low-carbon fabrication. The development of viable alternatives to carbon intensive and non-sustainable solutions such as reinforced concrete, or quarried rock, is hugely important in order to meet the EA’s organisational targets to achieve net zero by 2030. More broadly, decarbonisation of the coastal and subsea infrastructure industry will also provide an important contribution to wider UK pledges on climate change."

Justin Ridgewell, Coastal Advisor for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Environment Agency

“The idea of a carbon-neutral reef cube® that can be used to help rehabilitate reef ecosystems is exciting – we really need to do everything we can to give coral reefs a break”
