Eco-Engineering Ocean Hackathon 2024

Join us for the first-ever ARC Marine Eco-Engineering Ocean Hackathon! Taking place this March in Torquay, Devon, we’ll be bringing together innovators from across the country to examine and develop solutions to some of the biggest issues within the field of eco-engineering, through the lens of product design.

We’re looking for individuals to tackle challenges and develop new ideas surrounding product design-related issues to do with our reef cubes® (and other products), whilst holding true to the mission and values of ARC Marine and ensuring sustainability as a mainstay.

There will be awards for the leading ideas and the potential of a job opportunity (Product Design Engineer) for the right individual, not to mention your stay at the Hampton, plus food and travel will be covered by us!

What is the Eco-Engineering Ocean Hackathon?

It’s a 24-hour competition where you will work alongside team members to come up with solutions to some of our most pressing eco-engineering challenges. If accepted onto the hackathon, you will be placed on a team and will work together to come up with solutions. You will have a challenge leader to guide you, but you won’t know the specific challenge that you will be exploring until the day of the event.

Who are ARC Marine?

ARC Marine is an award-winning eco-engineering company that brings pre-cast nature-inclusive and carbon-neutral concrete solutions to marine industries.

Based in Cornwall and Devon, we specialise in designing, manufacturing, installing and monitoring subsea protection structures in order to enhance and study biodiversity.

What is our mission?

Our mission is to repair the world’s damaged marine ecosystems on an unprecedented scale.

We’re doing this by incorporating eco-friendly artificial reefs across the globe where they not only enhance biodiversity, but they serve as subsea protection, coastal defences, moorings, marine foundations and more.

By solving traditional marine problems with our plastic-free, low-carbon technologies, we allow a variety of industries to leave a lasting positive impact on the marine environment.

Testimonials

“Kier have been very satisfied and pleased with ARC Marine throughout the preconstruction and construction stages of the Newlyn Tidal R&D project. ARC Marine have fabricated and delivered exceptional Intertidal reef cube® ECO armour units for the project where all parties, including Kier, the Environment Agency and Atkins, have been very impressed with the quality of finish of the units. Overall a very exceptional service from ARC Marine and would highly recommend.”

Jack Walker, Site Agent / Chartered Engineer, Kier Infrastructure – Regional Civil Engineering

“reef cubes® is a unique product that could reach a massive global market. Marine-i has been proud to help ARC Marine develop and test their amazing new approach to marine conservation and in particular, its application to marine renewable energy. Their pioneering products have the potential to improve the health of our oceans for generations to come.”

Alex Whatley, University of Plymouth

"ARC Marine are providing 25% of the reef blocks for the Newlyn project. Their blocks offer multi-functional benefits, such as biodiversity enhancing design and low-carbon fabrication. The development of viable alternatives to carbon intensive and non-sustainable solutions such as reinforced concrete, or quarried rock, is hugely important in order to meet the EA’s organisational targets to achieve net zero by 2030. More broadly, decarbonisation of the coastal and subsea infrastructure industry will also provide an important contribution to wider UK pledges on climate change."

Justin Ridgewell, Coastal Advisor for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Environment Agency

“The idea of a carbon-neutral reef cube® that can be used to help rehabilitate reef ecosystems is exciting – we really need to do everything we can to give coral reefs a break”

Dr Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Explorer upon congratulating ARC Marine as an Ocean Impact Finalist, 2020.
